PrEP stands for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, which is a daily drug regimen to help prevent HIV. It involves a daily pill called Truvada that can help those at increased risk avoid HIV. Truvada contains two antiretroviral medicines that interfere with HIV’s ability to grow and take hold in the body after being exposed to the virus. When taken daily, the risk of contracting HIV can be reduced by more than 90 percent.
PrEP is for HIV-negative people who are at very high risk of contracting HIV through sexual activity. It is recommended for people who are HIV-negative and in an ongoing sexual relationship with an HIV-positive partner.
Taking PrEP requires an ongoing relationship with a physician. In order to start PrEP, a doctor must order a few tests including an HIV test to make sure you are HIV-negative. Then, every 3 months, while you’re taking the medication, your doctor will order an HIV test. Many insurance plans cover the cost of PrEP, and there is a financial assistance program if you qualify.
Find a doctor who specializes in PrEP. Make an appointment. Go to their office. Pay cash for the cost of the office visit (~$250 per visit). Get the required tests. Go back to their office to get the prescription and pay cash again for another visit. Get the prescription. Pay for office visits over and over again every 3 months. This process costs over $1,000 a year.
Instead of office visits, Sherpaa doctors use our app to talk with you, order tests, prescribe you medications, and solve your health problems. Simply join Sherpaa (instead of paying per office visit, unlimited care from Sherpaa doctors is $300 a year), launch the app, create a case (“I need PrEP”), and your Sherpaa doctor will be in touch with you within minutes.
They’ll ask you a series of questions and order the required tests for you within Sherpaa’s app. You’ll go to a local testing center and your results will appear in your case within Sherpaa’s app. From there, they’ll prescribe you Truvada within the app, you’ll choose your pharmacy, and pick up the medication in no time. No doctor office visits are required and you can communicate with our doctors when it’s convenient for you.
Every three months while you’re taking Truvada, your Sherpaa doctor will send you a message, check-in with you, and order the repeat HIV test. Sherpaa is private and secure and we’re on a mission to prevent HIV and help you live a safe, active life.
And because you’re a Sherpaa member, you can use Sherpaa for all of your medical needs, just as you would your own personal primary care doctor. It’s by far, the most economical and convenient way to get medical care from your own personal, trusted doctor who understands you and your needs.
